I'm a pop rock, contemporary singer songwriter living, teaching and making music in New York City. I started my musical life in Singapore where I studied classical music and performed in occasional piano recitals. I was also a piano teacher for a really long time. These earlier musical influences explain why you may hear a lot of the piano in my music!
I didn't always know that I was going to be a singer songwriter. I had it pretty rough when I was younger. (Hey, who hasn't had it rough right?) While I was trying to find my way into the clear, I moved to New York City. That was when I found my voice, to sing. It was singing that helped me to find my authentic self and to make sense of the rough stuff that had happened to me. (I know this sounds all mystical and oh so nebulous but hey, that's really how the story went). I was eventually encouraged by my voice coach to write songs, because he saw it in me, that this was something I would be good at. I said, "challenge accepted!" and spent the next 9 months writing songs, working and improving on them all the time, recording my album On My Own Terms in record time, collaborating with some very talented people who supported my artistic vision, released the album, and shared my soul with the world.
With songwriting, I realized that I had the ability to help others get through their own rough patches, stay strong, stay positive and hopefully come into the clear, like me. I wanted to write music that could empower others with a victorious mentality and motivate them towards living with the right attitude. I hoped that my music could heal them from whatever was bothering them or giving them sadness and frustration. I intended my music to say words that many of us often have no courage or ability to say.
It was really when I started to focus on how much I could give to others through art, that I was able to stop focusing on what bugged me or had previously gotten me down. Seriously. I wish I had known this sooner.
As an artist, singer and songwriter, I love sharing my work with my audience. I try to empower others through music. I seek to connect with my listeners by sincerely sharing my own vulnerabilities. I'm committed to truth and honesty in my art. To some level, I think we all want to feel connected to each other in our common humanity, and I hope that my gift of song will help to meet this purpose. Peace and love!
